Marco Cianchi was born and raised in Florence. Here he studied art history and graduated from the University of Florence. Then he received a postgraduate degree in art history from the University of Bologna. In 1981/82 he was a visiting scholar at Columbia University, and in 1996 was a researcher at Brown University.

He has been teaching art history (Renaissance and Modern) at CSU-IP-Florence since 1985. He also taught at Georgetown University, Syracuse University, Sarah Lawrence College, Istituto di Lingua e Cultura Italiana “Lorenzo de’ Medici,” and many other American University Programs in Florence. Since 1999 he has been a professor of contemporary art history at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence where he was also member of the Board of Directors and responsible for the Library and the Artistic Patrimony of this Institution founded in 1784.
